Soccer on the NES is definitely a soccer game on the NES. It’s soccer in its simplest, purest form; score more points than the other guys to win.

The only thing you can do in the game is pass and shoot the ball – there’s no sliding, headers or any fancy footwork here. There’s no stylistic visual flair or music outside of the title screen jingle, either. Though there are technically different teams to choose from, the only difference between teams is the colour of their jerseys. There’s no different play modes to speak of outside of single matches. The only thing of interest in this whole ass game is that half-time brings out a gaggle of cheerleaders to do a little jig, despite the fact that I’ve never seen cheerleaders at a soccer game in my entire life. But hey, at least that’s something.

There isn’t too much else to say about Soccer on the NES. Once you’ve played one round, you’ve played them all. It was a decent kick for 1985, but Soccer is only worth looking into if you’ve got nothing better to do while warming benches today.
